Face masks/coverings/respirators
Updated On: Jul 14, 2020

Brothers and Sisters,

There have been many questions regarding whether an employer can direct employees to wear a respirator, face mask/covering during the work day for their safety or the safety of others, the answer is yes.  Many employers are making them mandatory as part of their Safety Policy.  The mandatory use of this PPE may be while a person is working alone, is unable to social distance or in addition to social distancing.  In the end, all employers and members must follow OSHA's General Duty Clause which states:

(a)   Each employer - (1) shall furnish, to each of his employees', employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees. (2) shall comply with occuplational safety and health standards promulgated under this act.

(b)   Each employee - shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to this Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.

If you or our members have questions regarding working or returning to work during the COVID-19 Pandemic, please refer to the CDC Guidelines and OSHA Guidance information.  The links to the information had been sent our to All Locals and can also be found at https://.iuec.org/index/php/iuec-covid-19-resources/.

Thank you and Work Safe,

Mike Langer - IUEC Director of Safety
